The Swedish Transport Administration's (STA) permanent Trafsense installation covers 900 m of dual carriageway (2+2 lanes) on E16 at Borlänge, Sweden. The local speed limit is 100 km/h.

The Trafsense road monitoring system reliably tracks the position of each vehicle along the site in real time. This is valuable reference data for the STA when various third-party traffic sensors are undergoing testing in regular traffic on the site under the supervision of the STA. Trafsense solves this challenge due to its unique ability to both track each individual vehicle along the road and to record any lane changes or exit the vehicle may perform. As a part of the continuous tracking, Trafsense also continuously tracks which lane the vehicle is in.

The position and lane of each vehicle is updated by Trafsense 65 times per second, i.e. a vehicle typically moves 0.43 m between each Trafsense update. A real-time estimate of the vehicle length is also provided.

Data formats and interfaces are provided by Trafsense so that the STA can study individual vehicle behaviour, aggregated traffic patterns and traffic statistics with a previously unattainable precision and resolution.
