The pilot site was the westbound bore of the 1115 m Lyderhorn tunnel. This dual-lane bore has an Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of more than 20 000 vehicles. Speed limit is 70 km/h.
A pilot installation of the Trafsense road monitoring system was integrated with the NPRA's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to allow for a full benchmarking vs the tunnel's permanently installed camera-based AID system.
AID of stopped vehicles and of vehicle in wrong direction were tested as well as queue detection.
The results after almost 1.5 million vehicles had passed the pilot site, showed that the Trafsense road monitoring system had almost an order of magnitude fewer false alarms than the permanently installed camera-based AID system and well below the NPRA's requirement of < 1 false alarm per km per 24 hours.
Test traffic verified that Trafsense's Mean Time to Detect (MTTD) was well below the NPRA's requirement of < 20 seconds for stopped vehicles as well as for wrong-way driving.
