The single-bore Bogen Tunnel is 3.5 km long and opened in 2004 as a part of the European route E39 from Trondheim (Norway) to Aalborg (Denmark) which is interrupted by eight car ferries, including an international ferry connection between Norway and Denmark. The 1125 km long Norwegian part of E39 is called the Coastal Main Road as it connects Norway’s second, third, and fourth largest cities (Bergen, Stavanger/Sandnes, Trondheim) which all are port cities serving Norway’s blooming marine and offshore export industries.

After more than 20 years of service, the Bogen tunnel was ripe for an upgrade to bring it up to today’s European road safety standards, including state-of-the-art Automatic Incident Detection (AID) of stopped vehicles. The speed limit is 80 km/h.

The Trafsense road monitoring system is retrofitted in the Bogen Tunnel and integrated with ITV cameras and the road owner’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. Testing of the stop detection system throughout the tunnel has shown a 100% detection rate, all at a lifecycle cost far below traditional AID technologies.
